A Small Courtesy in the Sky

 

Yesterday, on a short flight from Narita to Itami in Osaka, I noticed something quietly meaningful. The flight was only about an hour on a Boeing 737-800, but what impressed me was not the aircraft or the route—it was the behavior of the passengers.

 

Many people chose not to recline their seats, even though they had every right to do so. Reclining a seat is a normal function, but it instantly reduces the space of the person behind you. In economy class, where space is already limited, even a small adjustment can make a big difference.

 

This is not something limited to Japan. I have seen the same behavior in the United States as well. On a flight from Seattle to San Diego, I noticed passengers making the same quiet choice—keeping their seats upright out of consideration for others.

 

No one forced them. No rule required it. There was no announcement or instruction. It was simply a personal decision to prioritize someone else’s comfort over one’s own convenience.

 

In a world where people often insist on their rights, these small acts of restraint feel refreshing. They remind us that real courtesy is not about policies or etiquette manuals, but about awareness of others.

 

Sometimes, the most meaningful signs of civilization are not found in grand gestures, but in small, silent choices.
