What a Businessperson Must Never Do

 

After many years in business, there is one thing I can say with absolute certainty that you must never do:
make promises or public commitments and then fail to deliver on them.

 

Put simply:
If you don’t say it, that’s fine. But if you say it, you must do it.
This is one of the most fundamental rules of business.

 

In business, words are trust.
The moment you say “I will do it,” “We will take care of it,” or “We will protect this,” your words carry the same weight as a contract. Even without written documents, people make decisions and take action based on what you say.

 

That is why you must never casually promise:

 

* something you have no intention of doing
* something you are not sure you can do
* something that depends on conditions you have not clearly stated

 

When you promise and fail to deliver, trust is damaged immediately. Often, there is no second chance. The more excuses you make, the more people conclude that your words have no weight.

 

This applies to politics as well.
Using strong language to raise expectations and then doing nothing is a clear case of saying without acting. It is a credibility issue. In the business world, no one does business with people like that.

 

My own rule is simple:
Do not say what you cannot do.
If you say it, do it.

 

If circumstances change, explain early. Do not run. Do not hide. Do not make excuses.
That is the only way trust is built.

 

In business, the greatest asset is not money or even the company itself.
It is trust.

 

And trust is built not by words, but by execution.
