Not Swinging at Full Power: Golf and Management

Until a recent surgery forced me to take a break, I played golf almost every week. My golf journey began back in junior high school. A driving range owner in Japan once told me, “You have a big build, so golf would suit you.” From that day on, I spent every moment at the range. Self-taught and driven, I only had one goal: to hit the ball as hard and as far as humanly possible.

Back then, I thought golf was purely a game of distance. In my late 20’s, I saw persimmon transition to metal woods, and again from steel to carbon shafts. I remember driving the green on a 360-yard par-four downhill and hitting my seven-iron nearly 200 yards once.

Yet, my scores were terrible because all I cared about was distance. Looking back now, I realize how closely this mirrors how I approached business.

For 38 years at PSPINC, I’ve operated at full throttle. I used to think slowing down meant falling behind, and stopping meant losing. I kept my foot permanently pressed to the floor, but age and physical reality have a way of teaching us honesty.

In golf, my body began protesting when I tried to swing like I used to. In business, I realized that pushing past my limits wasn't just causing stress—it also hurt my performance. The reality of physical limits replaced the anxiety that came with slowing down. This realization forced me to change my approach.

I stopped swinging at 100% every time. Now, I focus on only using the necessary power for the moment. I’m probably still working harder than most, but I no longer feel the need to give every single shot my absolute maximum.

The irony? My golf scores have actually improved. By easing off, my shots became more accurate. Fewer mistakes. Better results. And I believe the same principle applies to business. Growth isn't just about sprinting until you collapse. Sustainable leadership comes from knowing when to push and when to ease off.

I know I won’t be able to run at full speed forever the way I once did. But that’s exactly why I’m evolving. I’m learning the art of correct power—using my energy with precision rather than just force. Just as it transformed my golf game, I look forward to seeing how this new rhythm transforms my business.
