Why the United States Drew a Hard Line on Free Speech

When people ask why the United States is so different from many other countries when it comes to free speech, the answer is simple: experience.

America was founded by people who had lived under systems where the government decided what speech was acceptable. In those societies, words were not just opinions — they were something that could bring punishment, investigation, or social ruin. That kind of environment teaches people one thing very quickly: stay quiet.

That is why the First Amendment is so strong. It does not protect only polite speech. It protects uncomfortable, unpopular, and even offensive opinions. The founders understood something many modern societies forget: once the government is allowed to decide what is “harmful” speech, it will eventually decide what ideas are allowed to exist.

Many of the things I write — about politics, culture, and power — would get me questioned or in trouble in places like the UK, China under the CCP, North Korea, and other countries that regulate speech. Not because they are violent or criminal, but because they challenge narratives and make people uncomfortable. That alone tells you how fragile free expression becomes when words are controlled.

Freedom of speech does not mean everyone is kind. It means everyone is allowed to think out loud. It means bad ideas can be challenged instead of hidden. It means society grows through debate, not silence.

The American system accepts a messy truth: allowing people to speak freely is safer than allowing the government to decide who is allowed to speak at all.
