Japanese Credit Cards Don’t Actually Sell “Credit”

In Japan, almost everyone has a credit card.
Whether it’s VISA, Mastercard, or JCB, they’re an essential part of daily life and business. However, there’s a fundamental truth that many overlook: Japanese credit cards and American credit cards are entirely different financial products. They share the same name, but the system behind them is completely different.

The U.S. Perspective: Credit as a "Personal Loan"

When an American card issuer evaluates an applicant, they ask one key question: "How much money can we safely lend this individual?"

In the U.S., a credit card is essentially an unsecured line of credit. A limit of $20,000 or $50,000 represents the ceiling of a loan granted specifically to you. Within that limit, you have the freedom to spend as much as you want and choose to pay back only the minimum amount each month. The remaining balance carries high interest, functioning as a revolving debt.

Most importantly, they record your repayment history for life as your credit score. By borrowing and repaying consistently, you’re building your social trust.

The Japanese Perspective: Credit as "Deferred Payment"

In contrast, how do Japanese cards work?
Japanese credit cards are primarily designed for a one-time payment, automatically withdrawn from your bank account at the end of the month.

In essence, the system is saying: “You don’t need to pay now — just settle everything later.”

The bank or card issuer is primarily concerned with whether your account has sufficient funds on the specific day of the withdrawal. The goal isn't to foster long-term trust through lending.

Installments and Revolving Payments Are “Add-On Debt”

While Japan does have installment (bunkatsu) and revolving (revo) payments, these are often treated as add-on consumer loans triggered after you make the purchase. In the U.S., you’re spending from a debt account from the start. In Japan, you settle the payment first, then convert it into debt. It is a fundamental difference in architecture.

Why Many Japanese Professionals Lack "Credit" in the U.S.

In Japan, your employer, salary, and years of service determine your credit. In the U.S., your credit reflects your debt management history and your credit score. This creates a paradox for many Japanese expats:

  • They have plenty of money, but zero credit
  • They can’t buy a home
  • They struggle to get auto loans
  • They find it difficult to secure business financing

This isn't a reflection of their capability, but rather a clash of two entirely different financial systems.

The Bottom Line

In Japan, a credit card is a payment tool. It’s not designed to grow your creditworthiness. In the U.S., a credit card is the manifestation of your credit itself.

While both cultures use the word, credit card, two entirely different worlds operate beneath the surface. If you do business overseas, this is a difference worth understanding.
