The Uncomfortable Truth About Japan and Taiwan

There is an uncomfortable truth that many Japanese people may not realize, or may prefer not to think about: the main deterrent against the Chinese Communist Party’s ambition to take Taiwan is not Donald Trump, and not even the United States. It is Japan.

When a Taiwan crisis is discussed, the focus usually turns to Washington. People ask whether the U.S. would fight, whether the president would hesitate, or whether American public opinion would allow another war. Those are important questions, but they miss the real strategic reality. The geography of East Asia makes Japan the gatekeeper. Almost all U.S. military power in the region — air bases, naval bases, logistics hubs, and supply chains — operates from Japanese territory. Without Japan’s cooperation, America cannot defend Taiwan in any meaningful way.

If Taiwan were to fall under CCP control, Okinawa would immediately become the front line. Japan’s sea lanes, energy imports, and semiconductor supply would be directly threatened. This would not be a distant war. It would be a direct threat to Japan’s economy, security, and daily life.

Japan does not face a conflict with the Chinese people or Chinese civilization. The problem is the CCP regime, which uses military pressure, economic coercion, and political influence to change the status quo. And Beijing understands something very clearly: if Japan stands firm, Taiwan cannot be taken.

That is why the CCP works so hard to separate Japan from Taiwan — through propaganda, economic pressure, and political influence. They want Japan to believe Taiwan is someone else’s problem.

Even if a U.S. president such as Trump wanted to stay out, once Japan moves, America would have no choice but to act. If the U.S. abandoned Japan in a crisis, it would lose all trust from APEC partners and NATO allies alike. In the end, Japan’s resolve shapes not only Taiwan’s fate, but America’s credibility as well.
