Why I Still Trust Japan as a Business Partner

I have been doing business between Japan and the United States for nearly four decades. I have seen booms, bubbles, crashes, trade wars, and political cycles on both sides of the Pacific. One thing has remained consistent: Japan is a country you can trust to play by the rules.

 

With rising tension between Japan and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), many overseas companies are wondering whether Japan is still a safe place to do business. From my experience, not only is it safe — it is becoming more important than ever.

 

The difference between Japan and the CCP is simple but fundamental: Japan operates under the rule of law. China operates under the rule of the Party.

 

In Japan, contracts mean something. Courts are independent. Property rights are protected. Even when the government changes, your business does not suddenly become illegal. That stability is why companies like ours have been able to operate across borders for decades without fear that the rules will suddenly shift.

 

In China, I have seen the opposite. Entire industries have been shut down overnight. Companies that were welcomed one year are investigated the next. Data, technology, and even management decisions are subject to Party control. You do not truly own your business there — you are allowed to operate until you are no longer politically convenient.

 

Some people say China is large and powerful, so we must accept the risk. I disagree. Size does not replace trust.

 

Japan is not perfect. It can be slow. It can be bureaucratic. But it is predictable. When you invest in Japan, you know what you are getting — and more importantly, you know what you are not going to lose.

 

That is why, even with all the noise in geopolitics, I still choose Japan. Not because it is the loudest country in Asia, but because it is the most reliable one.

 

And in business, reliability is everything.
