When the Internet Went Dark in St. Petersburg

In December 2025, residents of Saint Petersburg experienced a sudden and widespread loss of mobile internet access. Messaging apps stopped working, navigation services failed, and access to news and everyday online tools disappeared. For a modern city that relies heavily on mobile connectivity, the impact was immediate and disruptive.

 

This was not a technical accident.

 

Telecom providers confirmed service problems but stated that the disruption was outside their control. Authorities described the outage as part of temporary “security measures,” citing concerns about possible drone threats. However, mobile internet access remained restricted even after official security alerts were lifted. There is no credible evidence that the shutdown resulted from a mistake or equipment failure. All indications point to an intentional restriction.

 

Internet shutdowns are increasingly used because they are simple and effective. By disabling mobile data, governments limit real-time communication, reduce the spread of images and videos, and slow independent reporting. Unlike blocking specific websites or platforms, a mobile internet shutdown affects everyone at once, regardless of purpose or intent.

 

By international standards, this constitutes censorship. Restricting access to the internet limits freedom of expression and access to information, even if done temporarily or under the banner of security.

 

I strongly oppose any form of censorship by governments. History shows that only countries with something to hide resort to shutting down communication channels. Open societies do not fear information; they address problems transparently. When governments turn off the internet, they are not protecting citizens — they are controlling them.

 

The situation in Saint Petersburg is not just a local incident. It is a reminder that when connectivity can be switched off at will, freedom becomes conditional, and that should concern everyone.
