I had lunch as a take-out from a Mexican restaurant near my office today. They had a special: two chicken legs, beans, rice, and a soda for $10.99. After tax and tip, the total came to about $14. It doesn’t sound expensive, and honestly, it’s a pretty good deal by American standards.
But when I really think about it—and compare it to Japan—the picture changes completely. With $14, which is roughly ¥2,100, you can enjoy a very good lunch at a very good restaurant in Japan. In some places, you can even get a decent dinner for that price. The value you receive in Japan for the same amount of money is simply on a different level.
So when a lunch under $15 starts to feel like a “great deal” here in the U.S., I find it very disturbing. It means I am slowly getting used to these high prices. And that realization alone makes me uncomfortable.
