The Frog With Binoculars and Japan’s “Kaeru” Tradition

 

During my walk this morning at Bellevue Downtown Park, I came across a small scene that made me stop for a moment. In the children’s playground area, there was a little frog figurine sitting quietly with binoculars in hand. It looked as if it was carefully watching over the kids, its serious expression adding a touch of humor that brightened my morning.

 

Seeing this frog instantly reminded me of Ise Jingu in Japan. Around the shrine, you can find many frog statues placed there over the years. Fishermen traditionally prayed for a safe return from the sea — “kaeru,” meaning “to return,” sounds the same as “frog” in Japanese. Because of this wordplay, frogs became symbols of safety and good fortune. In Japan, frogs are also associated with luck returning, money returning, and happiness returning.

 

Standing in an American park and suddenly seeing a frog like this made me wonder if there might be a similar cultural meaning here. Maybe it’s simply a playful decoration for children, but it still brought a sense of nostalgia. It’s interesting how a small object in a foreign place can quietly connect you back to home.

 

A daily walk becomes a little more special when you make these small discoveries. And today, that frog with binoculars seemed to be searching for something — perhaps the smiles of the children playing nearby.
