Vlogging in Japan is completely possible, but you must navigate a unique combination of laws and social expectations that are much stricter than in the United States. The most important rule is simple: avoid filming identifiable people without permission, and if someone accidentally appears in your footage, blur their face before posting. Japan recognizes肖像権 (portrait rights), and posting strangers online without consent can lead to legal complaints, deletion orders, and even civil lawsuits.

 

When filming in public, focus on scenery, food, shops, festivals, and city life, not on individuals. Wide-angle shots are safe, but avoid zooming in on faces, capturing private conversations, or filming people in distress, as this can be consideredプライバシー侵害 (privacy invasion). Japan’s defamation laws are also unusually strict: even true footage that embarrasses someone can result in a名誉毀損 (defamation) claim.

 

Inside trains, restaurants, stores, shrines, and schools, remember these are private property. Staff have the right to ask you to stop filming or leave, and it is important to comply immediately to avoid being treated as a nuisance.

 

Hidden or secret recording is never acceptable and may be treated as harassment or illegal photography. Keep your camera visible, be respectful, and stop filming if anyone shows discomfort.
