Safety First — But Let’s Not Forget Courtesy
This morning, a school bus stopped on the opposite side of the road to pick up a child. As the law requires, I stopped too. When a school bus flashes its red lights and extends the “STOP” sign, all traffic — in both directions — must come to a complete stop. It’s a rule designed to protect children, and I fully support it.
However, the bus remained stopped for several minutes while the parent slowly brought the child to the bus. Meanwhile, cars piled up for more than a block in both directions. I watched, and I couldn’t help thinking — a little courtesy would go a long way here.
Of course, children's safety is the priority. But at the same time, when a school bus stops, everyone else on the road stops too. Parents should be ready when the bus arrives, and make an effort to move quickly so the bus — and all the waiting drivers — can continue safely and efficiently. I think parents should try to get their child onto the bus as quickly as possible once it arrives.
Even something as simple as a nod, wave, or “thank you” to waiting drivers can show appreciation. It tells people, “I see you, and I appreciate your patience.”
Safety is non-negotiable. But courtesy matters too. With a little awareness and consideration, we can keep our kids safe and keep the morning traffic flowing smoothly for everyone.
