What Is an Elevator Pitch? How to Explain Your Company in 30 Seconds

Have you ever heard the term “elevator pitch”?
It refers to a short and engaging presentation that explains your business or idea in about 30 seconds to a minute — the length of a typical elevator ride.

The origin of the term comes from the idea: If you were to accidentally meet an investor, an executive, or a potential new client in an elevator, could you explain your business in that short window of time? In other words, it’s all about how clearly and memorably you can communicate in a very short time.

In today’s fast-paced business world, people don’t have time to listen to long explanations. That’s why having a short, clear, and memorable message is so important. No matter how great your product or service is, its value won't be conveyed if you can't capture the audience's interest. An elevator pitch helps you make that first connection.

So, what does an actual Elevator Pitch look like? Take PSPINC, for example:

At PSPINC, we develop and provide bilingual web hosting and business software for Japanese and small businesses in the U.S. Our mission is to make IT more accessible by offering tools that let anyone create and manage a website easily even without specialized technical knowledge.

In this short pitch, you can clearly understand who PSPINC serves, what it offers, and what value it brings.
The ideal Elevator Pitch is one that allows the listener to understand in just a few seconds.

The key to creating an effective Elevator Pitch is to avoid stuffing in too much information. You can only speak about 100 to 150 words in a short time. Within that limit, focus on conveying who you are, what problem you solve, and how you differ from the competition. Also, try to avoid technical terms and use simple, easy-to-understand language.

The Elevator Pitch is like your company's business card. It is the first set of words that establishes your presence with a new acquaintance.
Even if you have great products or services, many companies struggle to explain them simply. That’s why preparing a concise way to express your company’s value can make a big difference in your business growth.

Have you ever created an elevator pitch for your company?
