Are Leatherman Tools with a 7 cm Blade Illegal in Japan?
Many Leatherman multi-tools sold in the United States come with a knife blade around 7 centimeters in length. If you bring such a tool to Japan, is it illegal? The answer depends on how it is used and where it is kept.

 

Under Japanese law, specifically the Firearm and Sword Control Act (commonly known as the “Gun and Sword Law”), it is illegal to carry a knife with a blade longer than 6 centimeters without a valid reason. Therefore, a Leatherman with a 7 cm blade is legal to own at home but illegal to carry in public without a specific and justifiable purpose, such as camping, fishing, or professional use. However, vague reasons like “for protection” or “just in case” are not accepted as lawful purposes and may result in arrest.

 

Even if you used the tool for camping, leaving it in your car or bag afterward can still be considered illegal if the police determine there is no current necessity for carrying it. Violations may result in fines or imprisonment.

 

Owning the tool itself is generally allowed unless it exceeds 15 centimeters and falls under “sword-class items” requiring registration. However, misuse or careless carrying can lead to serious legal consequences.

 

In short: You may legally possess a 7 cm Leatherman tool at home in Japan, but you must not carry it around without a valid, immediate reason. After use, store it securely at home to stay within the law.
