ASKUL, a major Japanese e-commerce and logistics company, suffered a ransomware attack that forced its core systems offline, resulting in a complete halt in order processing and product shipments. The disruption did not stay within the company. Because retailers such as MUJI and LOFT relied on ASKUL’s logistics infrastructure, they were also forced to suspend their online sales. This incident clearly demonstrates that when systems stop, business stops, trust erodes, customers leave, and brand value deteriorates. IT failures are no longer an issue to be left solely to technical teams; they must be understood by executives as direct business risks.

 

The key lesson is that companies unable to recover quickly will be left behind in the market. Without reliable data backups, operations cannot resume, and without a replicated environment, the time required for recovery grows longer, allowing customers to shift to competitors. In contrast, companies that can switch to backup systems quickly can minimize damage and maintain trust. Executives must clearly understand how many hours their company can afford to be down, how much revenue is lost per hour, and take responsibility for making strategic investments in business continuity.
