The End of the LDP–Komeito Coalition: A Turning Point Toward Conservative Renewal in Japan

The recent breakup of the long-standing coalition between Japan’s Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and Komeito is not merely a political rift—it marks a deeper shift in the country’s political current. The decline of the LDP did not begin with this event. For years, its embrace of globalization and DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) initiatives—policies that many conservatives feel have diluted Japan’s cultural identity—has gradually eroded public trust and support.

 

Amid this changing tide, newly elected Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi stands out as a leader with clear conservative convictions. She values national sovereignty, tradition, family, and faith, and her political stance evokes comparisons to figures like U.S. President Donald Trump and former U.K. Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher—leaders who embodied a strong, self-reliant conservatism. Because of this, many within Japan’s conservative circles welcome Komeito’s departure as an opportunity for the LDP to return to its ideological roots.

 

However, the political reality remains challenging. The LDP no longer holds a majority on its own, which means effective governance will require case-by-case collaboration with opposition and centrist parties. On the other hand, Komeito—holding only 24 seats in total—faces an uncertain future as an independent party. Its traditional pacifist and foreign policy stances, often criticized as being sympathetic toward China, may further weaken its domestic support base.

 

The collapse of this coalition could be seen as a turning point in Japanese politics—a shift from “centrist stability” to a potential conservative revival. The key question now is whether Prime Minister Takaichi can translate her principles into practical policies and rebuild the public’s trust in leadership. The success or failure of this new direction will likely define Japan’s next decade.

Komeito is often seen as close to China because of its historical ties through Soka Gakkai, which built friendly relations with Chinese leaders even before Japan’s normalization with Beijing.

 

The party favors dialogue and diplomacy over confrontation, often acting as a moderate bridge between Japan and China.

 

Although sometimes viewed as “pro-CCP,” Komeito insists it is pro-peace, not pro-China — aiming to maintain stable relations and prevent conflict. In reality, it’s the most China-friendly major party in Japan, but its stance is based on pragmatism, not allegiance.
