The Minimum Requirements to Succeed as an Independent Entrepreneur
Many people dream of starting their own business, but they’re often held back by concerns about handling operations like accounting, legal matters, and administration on their own.
For example, many have never even managed their own taxes. While it’s true that going independent isn’t easy, you can always outsource specialized tasks to professionals. What really matters is whether you are suited for the business you want to pursue.
I founded my own company 38 years ago and have met many aspiring entrepreneurs since then. Some have succeeded in building their businesses, while others, unfortunately, have not. Based on my experience, here are a few essential traits of a successful independent entrepreneur:
1. Commitment to Hard Work
If you believe that going independent means more free time and an easier life, you won’t succeed. You must be the kind of person who thinks about your work day and night. If you cannot put work at the top of your priorities, independence may not be the right path for you.
2. Ability to Make Quick Decisions
While it’s important to gather information before making a decision, waiting too long can cause you to miss opportunities. Those who succeed are able to quickly set a direction and consistently put in the effort to move forward. Without decisiveness, independence is not for you.
3. Basic Numerical Literacy
You don’t need to be a genius, but you do need a basic understanding of numbers—at least at the level of elementary math. You must be able to grasp economic conditions. If you constantly rely on others for these insights, your company will drift away from your vision. Successful entrepreneurs have convictions of their own and the ability to make independent judgments.
4. Willingness to Listen and Build a Strong Network
Independent business owners may appear isolated, but in reality, they are constantly listening to others and paying attention to trends in society. By listening to others, they expand their networks and sharpen their thinking. If you remain self-centered and disconnected from the world, you won’t succeed.
In my view, only those who possess all of these traits can successfully launch and sustain their own business.
