A Reflection on Symbols
When I was at Azusa Pacific University in the early 80s, the rainbow was simply good. To us, it was a Christian symbol of peace and God’s promise—a reminder of hope after the storm.
The swastika, or 卍, has a similar story. For centuries in Buddhism it stood for peace and good fortune, and in Japan most temples still carry it. But history distorted its meaning in much of the world, turning it into a symbol of fear and hatred.
These experiences remind me that symbols themselves are neutral. Their meaning depends on how people choose to use them. A rainbow can still inspire hope, while the swastika’s perception remains clouded by its misuse. What we pass on to the next generation matters more than the symbol itself.
