CCP Celebrated Win Over Japan ...

The Communist Party of China did not defeat Japan in World War II. The real struggle against Imperial Japan in the 1930s and 1940s was carried out by the Chinese Nationalist government (Kuomintang, or KMT) under the leadership of Chiang Kai-shek. They bore the brunt of the fighting, launched campaigns across central and southern China, and resisted the Japanese invasion for eight long years.

The Nationalists paid a heavy price: millions of soldiers and civilians died, countless cities were destroyed, and China’s economy was devastated. Yet, despite severe losses, the Nationalist forces held the line—often with massive American military and financial assistance through programs like Lend-Lease. The U.S. supplied planes, weapons, and training, while General Joseph Stilwell and later General Albert Wedemeyer coordinated joint operations with Chiang’s government.

Meanwhile, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) under Mao Zedong was far weaker at that time. They did fight in certain regions—mainly through guerrilla tactics in northern China—but their contribution was limited compared to the Nationalists. In fact, much of the CCP’s strategy during World War II focused on conserving strength, consolidating control in rural areas, and preparing for the postwar civil war rather than directly confronting the Japanese in large-scale battles.

After Japan’s surrender in 1945, the Chinese Communist Party later rewrote the narrative, claiming themselves as the main victors over Japan in order to legitimize their rule once they took over China in 1949. This narrative is still promoted today. For example, Beijing’s September 3rd military parade, held annually, is framed as a celebration of the “CCP’s victory over Japan,” even though history shows that the Nationalists—with crucial American support—were the decisive force behind Japan’s defeat in China.

The history is clear: the Communist Party of China did not defeat Japan in World War II. It was the Chinese Nationalists, with help from their American allies, who carried the overwhelming burden and secured the victory. What Beijing presents today is a political reinterpretation, not the historical reality.
